Modern Buildings to Be Removed from Forbidden City to Preserve Its Ancient Look

The Forbidden City in Beijing is going to have a fresh new look with a better ancient ambiance, as all modern buildings within it will be removed and all pavements inside will also be replaced by using traditional building materials and adding more greenery, revealed by the curator of the Palace Museum Shan Jixiang.

The Forbidden City

The Forbidden City, also called the palace, once served as the residence of 24 Chinese emperors of both the Ming and Qing Dynasties, attracting millions of tourists to visit it every year from all over the world. In the past, more than 14,800 square meters of prefabricated buildings and temporary structures were built to serve as warehouses and offices, but all of them will be demolished to preserve an ancient look. Shan Jixiang says the authority will spend the next three years ensuring the Forbidden City has only ancient architecture left to hand over a magnificent and beautiful Forbidden City intact for the next 600 years.

The Forbidden City also plans to open more historic areas to visitors this year. According to Shan Jixiang, 76 % of its total 160,000 square meters of ancient architecture are being opened to the public this year, 4 % more will be opened in the next two years, and 9 % more by 2025.
