Ludian Earthquake: No Impact on Yunnan Tourism

On Sunday, August 3rd, 2014, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Ludian County of Zhaotong Prefecture in Southwest China's Yunnan Province. It has caused at least 589 deaths and 1,800 people injured. Transportation, electricity, and telecommunications were cut off in the county. So far all possible measures have been taken by the government to rescue lives. Meanwhile, as the epicenter is located far away from Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, Xishuangbanna and other tourist hotspots in Yunnan, the earthquake shows no impacts on tourism.

A few travelers are now concerned if the earthquake would affect their travel in Yunnan. But according to our local office and feedback from our travelers in Yunnan, no travelers in Yunnan have been hurt or affected by the incident. For now, it is still safe to travel to these places. Ludian County is located northeast of Yunnan Province. It has a certain distance from major tourist destinations in Yunnan Province. For example, it is located 277 miles from Kunming, which is nearer to Ludian than other tourist cities.
