Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival 2014 on the Way

Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival is right on the way! Until June 8, 2014, a series of large-scale events will be staged to celebrate the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, including neighborhood Dragon Boat Races, held almost in each district across the city, San Miguel BeerFest, CCB(Asia) Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races, and endless activities and cultural exhibitions, making the carnival an energetic mix of ancient Chinese tradition, competitive sport and parties. Expected to attract 6,000 professional dragon boat athletes and over 100,000 spectators, the carnival is considered the largest and funniest of its kind.

Also known as the Tuen Ng Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of each 5th lunar month to commemorate the death of a Chinese national hero named Qu Yuan, who threw himself into the Miluo River almost 2,000 years ago at the news of his country being defeated.  Qu was so respected that local people took their boats trying to retrieve his corpse and threw Zong Zi into the river to feed fish so that they would not eat Qu Yuan's body. Today, Chinese people in every corner of the world still practice the tradition of eating zongzi and going boat racing during the festival.
