Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La Destroyed by Fire

A fire broke out in the famous Dukezong Ancient Town in southwest China’s Shangri-La County on January 11, 2014. A total of 242 houses were destroyed, including many hostels and stores. In addition to this, a great many cultural relics, Thangkas and Buddhist arts and treasures were burnt down in the fire. Currently, the cause of the fire remains unknown.

Located on the southeast corner of Shangri-La County in Yunnan province, Dukezong Ancient Town is an ancient Tibetan town with a history of more than 1,300 years. Dukezong means “the moon town” and a castle built on stone”. This ancient town is noted for its well-preserved Tibetan dwellings and the world's largest prayer wheel. It is also an important stop on the ancient Tea Horse Road. These days, it has become an important tourist hotspot in Shangri-La. Due to the fire, the ancient town has to close its door to tourists for the moment. The head of Shangri-La County said that the ancient town will be rebuilt in its original Tibetan style.
